Flood Mitigation Tips

In case of emergency please contact local law enforcement or dial 911. Flood Control District 9 is not an emergency response organization.

Know Your Flood Risk:

Use the Idaho Map to explore flood hazards and understand your community's risk.

2

Stay Informed:

Monitor local officials' websites and social media pages for up-to-date weather information, flood warnings, and evacuation orders.

3

Consider purchasing flood insurance, as most homeowners and renters policies don't cover flood damage.

4

Prepare an Emergency Kit:

Have an emergency kit in your home and vehicle, including essentials like water, food, first-aid supplies, and a flashlight.

4

Clear Gutters and Downspouts:

Ensure gutters and downspouts are clear of debris to prevent water from pooling around your foundation.

4

Keep Storm Drains Clear:

Ensure storm drains near your property are free from debris and contact your municipal government if a drain is malfunctioning.

4

Secure Propane Tanks:

Anchor and secure propane tanks to prevent them from floating away.

4

Develop a Plan:

Decide in advance which items must be moved or elevated and where to move them.

4

Consider Floodproofing:

Explore options like installing flood vents in foundation walls, garages, and other enclosed areas.

4

Grading and Landscaping:

Grade and landscape your property to drain away from structures and into the street.

During a Flood

  • Follow Evacuation Orders: Evacuate if directed and obey road closures and caution signs.

  • Turn Around, Don't Drown: Never drive or walk through floodwaters, even if they seem shallow.

  • Find Higher Ground: If flooding is imminent, move to higher ground immediately.

  • Stay Off Bridges: Avoid bridges over fast-moving water, as floodwaters can erode bridge foundations.

  • Seek Shelter: Find safe shelter immediately.

  • Avoid Storm Drains and Sewers: Stay away from storm drains and sewers, as they can be dangerous during floods.
